Did men or women play the violin in reniassance time?

In Renaissance times, both men and women played the violin. However, there were more male violinists than female violinists. This was because playing the violin was considered to be a masculine activity, and women were often discouraged from playing musical instruments. Additionally, women who did play the violin were often not allowed to perform in public.
