Act 1
A group of four friends, Rodolfo (a poet), Marcello (a painter), Colline (a philosopher), and Schaunard (a musician), are struggling to make ends meet. They are all starving and behind on their rent. Schaunard comes in with food and wine, and they start to celebrate. As they are celebrating, Rodolfo hears a knock at the door. It is Mimi, a young seamstress, who has come to borrow some light. Rodolfo falls in love with Mimi and invites her to dinner.
Act 2
Mimi and Rodolfo are in love. They move in together and start to build a life together. However, Mimi is still ill with consumption. She goes to the doctor, who tells her that she will not live much longer. Rodolfo is devastated, but he vows to stay with Mimi until the end.
Act 3
Mimi is getting sicker and weaker. Rodolfo takes her to a cafe, where they are joined by their friends. Mimi is so weak that she can hardly speak. Rodolfo gives her a warm embrace and they are both comforted.
Act 4
Mimi dies. Rodolfo is heartbroken. He returns to their old apartment and finds Mimi's old belongings. He remembers the time they spent together and weeps for her loss.
