How did shakespeare come up with the name Othello?

The name "Othello" was not invented by Shakespeare. It was a real-life name, and Shakespeare borrowed it from a story he had read. The name is of Venetian origin, and it was used by a historical Venetian commander, Othello the Moor, who was killed in service to the Venetian Republic in 1571. Shakespeare likely came across the name in one of the many books he read during his lifetime.
