Why does Ponyboy and Johnny rush to the burning church?

In S E Hinton's novel "The Outsiders', Ponyboy and Johnny do not rush to a burning church. They decide to run away after accidentally killing Bob, a member of the rival gang, the Socs. They eventually find themselves hiding out in a church to avoid the police and the vengeful Socs. However, the church does not catch fire during the story.
