Frankie Goes To Hollywood were formed in Liverpool, United Kingdom in 1980 by vocalist Holly Johnson, guitarist Zang Tuumb (Mark O'Toole), bassist Brian Nash, keyboardists Paul Rutherford and Peter Gill. The band was initially named "The Squad", but changed their name to "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" after the Frankie Goes to Hollywood club in Liverpool.
The line-up of Frankie Goes to Hollywood was Holly Johnson, lead vocals; Paul Rutherford, keyboards, vocals; Peter Gill, keyboards; Mark O'Toole, guitars; Brian Nash, bass and J. J. Jeczalik (session), additional keyboards and engineering.
Their first single, "Relax", was released in late 1983 and became a huge hit, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart and remaining there for six weeks. The single also charted well in the US, peaking at number ten. The single was followed by "Two Tribes" which was released in March 1984 and also reached number one in the UK Singles Chart.
The band released their debut album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome, in October 1984 which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and remained there for three weeks. The album was also a commercial success in the US, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over 6 million copies worldwide.
The band was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1985, winning one for Best Music Video for the single "Relax". However, the band broke up in 1987 due to creative and commercial differences.
