What is a courante?

A courante is a light, lively Baroque dance in triple meter. It originated in France in the 16th century and quickly became popular throughout Europe. The courante is characterized by its flowing, graceful movements, and its use of syncopation and hemiola (the temporary shifting of the beat).

Courantes were often danced in pairs, with the second courante being faster and more elaborate than the first. They were also popular for use in court ballets and other theatrical productions.

The courante continued to be popular into the 18th century, but it eventually declined in popularity as new dances, such as the waltz and the polka, became more fashionable. However, the courante remains an important part of the Baroque dance repertoire and is still performed today by historical dance enthusiasts and musicians.
