2. Honesty: John initially tries to hide his relationship with Abigail, in order to protect her reputation as well as his. But he quickly realises the consequences of his dishonesty and confesses to the affair, accepting full responsibility for his actions.
3. Selflessness: Throughout the play, John acts in the interest of others, not himself. This is most apparent when he willingly risks his life to expose the court's corruption.
4. Courage: John is courageous enough to stand up to the powerful forces that are oppressing Salem, even when he knows it will probably harm him. He defends those he believes are innocent and speaks up against injustice.
5. Pride: John struggles to overcome his pride and admit to his sins, even when he knows it could benefit the larger community. His desire to protect his reputation can lead him to avoid confrontation, even when necessary.
