What is phonology traditionally focused on?

The traditional focus of phonology is on the sound systems of languages. Specifically, phonology studies how sounds are organized and used to form meaningful units, such as words and sentences. Phonologists examine the structure of phonemes, the smallest contrastive units of sound in a language, and the rules that govern their combination. They also investigate the relationship between sounds and other linguistic elements, such as stress, tone, and intonation.
