What is the hamletting?

Hamletting refers to the practice of dividing large landholdings into numerous individual smallholdings of land for the purpose of agricultural cultivation of crops and rearing of animals that is practiced commonly amongst agricultural communities.

For centuries, hamletting ensured efficient utilization of land to provide for large communities, with families being allocated portions on which individuals and groups developed farming systems. While land was commonly owned, individual families held rights as managers/users.
