What is Macbeth state of mind in his final battle with Macduff?

Macbeth is in a state of despair and resignation in his final battle with Macduff. He has lost all hope of victory and is haunted by the prophecies of the witches. He knows that he is doomed and is determined to die fighting, rather than surrender. Macbeth is tired of life, guilt-ridden from the murder of King Duncan and his countless atrocities, so he no longer fears mortality. This mental state is reflected in his memorable lines, "Lay on, Macduff, / And damned be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!'"
