Why the socs and greasers fight during their first encounter after movie in outsiders?

In the movie "The Outsiders," the first encounter between the Socs and the Greasers after the movie does not result in a fight. The tension between them is evident and the Socs harass Ponyboy and Johnny but they do not engage in a physical fight.
