What is a mask in drama?

In drama, a mask is a covering for the face or head usually worn either as a disguise or for protective purposes. In the theatrical context, masks signify and convey emotional states.

Masks have been essential symbols throughout history; ancient Greek, Roman, and Japanese performers, as well as actors from the Italian renaissance would utilize masks during stage plays for symbolic reasons and theatrical flair.
