Symbolism was a late nineteenth-century art movement of French, Russian, and Belgian origin in poetry and theater that used symbolic images and obscure metaphorical language to represent abstract ideas and emotions. Although not as popular as realism and naturalism, symbolism influenced some writers, including W.B. Yeats.
