What has proctor been contemplating doing on the crucible?

In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, Reverend John Hale contemplates leaving Salem and abandoning the witch trials. He has come to believe that the accusations are unfounded and that innocent people are being condemned to death. Hale is also troubled by the fact that he has been used by the court to justify its actions, and he feels guilty about the role he has played in the proceedings.
