What is a revenge tragedy?
Revenge tragedy, also known as revenge play or blood tragedy, is a genre of tragic drama in which the main plot features a character or group of characters taking revenge on someone who has wronged them. One of the characters seeks retribution due to the loss of honor for themselves or one's household as the result of another character's behavior, usually murder of a close family member. Some famous examples of revenge tragedies include Shakespeare's Hamlet, Titus Andronicus, and The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd.
