Job Duties of Acting

A good actor can make any role look effortless, but that is because he has put hard work and research into the role to make his performance convincing. An actor has certain duties which he must attend to in order to pull off a convincing character portrayal.
  1. Vocal Training

    • An actor must have rigorous vocal training. The voice of an actor is one of her most important tools. An actor must consistently practice vocalization, from simple exercises in enunciation to exercises in expanding vocal range. Analyzing the tone of voice and diction as it applies to a particular character is vital to an effective acting performance. An actor should pay special attention to inflection, tenor and articulation, right down to how the vowels and consonants sound coming from her throat.

    Physical Training

    • An actor must maintain a certain physical fitness and be aware of his body and its movements. This is an important thespian duty, as the actor’s body can visually communicate even the subtlest of emotions. An actor doesn’t necessarily have to be in peak physical form, but the actor must be in control of his body and muscle movement. Working out and exercises in movement are important duties of an actor.

    Language

    • An actor must have a refined understanding of language, as language is a major tool the actor wields. The job of the actor is to interpret a script and communicate it effectively to an audience. Understanding language and its nuances is a duty an actor should dedicate herself to in order to most effectively portray a character through the character’s dialogue.

    Research

    • The best exercise for an actor is to research theater and film. Through experiencing the art of the dramatic, an actor develops a comprehension and appreciation for his role in a theatrical project. By studying plays and film, watching great actors and taking notes, an actor is able to hone in on the art of acting and can incorporate lessons into his art through the analytical process.
