In the movie Westside story why was turf important to gangs?

Turf is important to gangs in Westside Story because it represents their territory and sense of belonging. The Jets and Sharks are two rival gangs who vie for control of the streets of New York City. Each gang has its own turf, which they defend fiercely from the other gang. Turf is also important to the gangs because it is where they can engage in their criminal activities, such as petty theft and drug dealing. Additionally, turf provides the gangs with a sense of identity and purpose. Being part of a gang gives the members a sense of belonging and acceptance.
