Where had Annemarie seen Sweden in Number the Stars by Lois Lowry?

Annemarie doesn't actually see Sweden in *Number the Stars*.

She dreams about it. This happens when her family is discussing the possibility of her and her little sister Kirsti fleeing to Sweden with Ellen Rosen, the Jewish girl they are helping. The idea is terrifying, but also hopeful.

Here's a quote from the book:

> "Sweden," she whispered, "It's so far away. And the sea... It's dark and cold and big."

>

> "But the sea is beautiful," Kirsti said, her eyes wide. "And Sweden is where the sun goes to sleep."

>

> Annemarie squeezed her hand. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to be so far away, but she knew, in her heart, that Sweden was safe. That night, she dreamed of the sea, and of Sweden.

The dream signifies Annemarie's yearning for a world free from the dangers of Nazi occupation.
