Biography
Didur was born on 18 June 1878 in Sanok, Poland, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He began his musical education in the choir of the local church. He had his professional debut in 1900 at the Kraków Opera.
Didur's career quickly flourished, and he soon sang at the major opera houses of Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opéra. He also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where he made his debut in 1908 as the title role in "Aida".
Didur was a versatile singer with a powerful and resonant voice. He was particularly admired for his interpretations of Wagnerian roles such as Wotan, Siegfried, and Hans Sachs. He also excelled in Russian operas, such as Boris Godunov and Prince Igor.
In addition to his operatic career, Didur also appeared in concerts and recitals. He was a gifted linguist and could sing in several languages, including Polish, German, Italian, French, and Russian.
Didur retired from the operatic stage in 1932, but he continued to teach voice. He died in 1943 in Lwów, Poland.
Legacy
Didur was one of the most acclaimed bass-baritones of his generation. He was known for his beautiful voice, his impressive musicianship, and his charismatic stage presence. He made numerous recordings, which continue to be enjoyed by opera lovers today.
Didur was also a dedicated teacher, and many of his students went on to successful careers in opera. He is considered one of the most influential voice teachers of the 20th century.
