How to Improve as a Stand-Up Comedian

Developing as a stand-up comedian can be difficult, especially at first when you may lack confidence in your abilities and are still discovering how to master comedic skills. There are steps you can take, however, to help you practice and gain confidence for when you deliver your routine to a live audience. Organizing and polishing your material, developing an engaging stage presence and staying calm under pressure will allow you to greatly improve as a stand-up comedian.

Instructions

    • 1

Carry a notebook and pen or a voice recorder with you at all times in order to take notes of anything amusing that happens to you during your daily routine. In particular, take notes of things that you feel you can develop into bits for your routine. Later, work on detailing these bits and developing jokes. Polish your delivery and set an attitude for the bits.

    • 2

Memorize the structure of your routine without memorizing the exact wording of the delivery. This will allow your routine to avoid sounding overly scripted. Practice the routine several times in private to make sure you will not forget bits. Speak your routine aloud to practice the delivery. Develop connections and ties between your jokes to help you transition between them without sounding choppy. These connections will also serve as memory aids.

    • 3

Learn about who your audience is before doing your routine, and adjust the jokes to suit the situation. Be careful with material that is related to politics, religion, race or dirty jokes. The key is having the flexibility to adapt to your audience; your routine needs to be both appropriate and relatable. In particular, be aware of what kind of language will be appropriate for your audience and whether profanity is acceptable.

    • 4

Develop confidence in yourself and your material. Tell yourself that you know that you are funny, and that it is not important if some audience members do not find your material humorous. Set aside nervous thoughts before you go on stage. Appear confident, speak clearly and openly, and use loose, free gestures.

Adjust your delivery and material as you start to get a feel for the audience. In the process, try to personalize your routine so that it relates to, and interacts with, the audience.
