Why does the Wicked Witch of West want to kill Dorothy?

In L Frank Baum's original novel 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' the witch does not want to kill Dorothy. She merely wants to take her magical shoes. However, the Witch is killed in the story when Dorothy empties a bucket of water over her.
