Who stole buck in chapter one The Call of the Wild?

In the novel "The Call of the Wild", Buck is stolen by Manuel, the assistant of a dog-musher named Perrault. Manuel secretly sells Buck to a group of men called the "Scotch half-breeds" who are in search of strong sled dogs for their journey to the Yukon.
