The Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL), also known as the Sierra Leone Tribunal, was established in 2002 by the United Nations Security Council by means of Resolution 1315. The SCSL is a mixed court that operates independently from both Sierra Leone and the United Nations. It draws on legal material and principles from both domestic Sierra Leone law and international law.

The SCSL has jurisdiction over serious violations of international humanitarian and Sierra Leonean law committed in the territory of Sierra Leone after 30 November 1996. The court has a dual mandate to prosecute those who bear the greatest responsibility for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of Sierra Leone during the years 1996 to 2002 and to contribute to the restoration and maintenance of peace in the country.
