How to Do a Shadow Silhouette With a Light

Creating shadow silhouettes is an important part of theater and culture all over the world and is an interesting hobby in which everyone can take part. Before cameras, people immortalized themselves with silhouette portraits. You can also create skits and scenarios using light and shadow. Instructions

    • 1

Place your light or flashlight 5 feet from the blank wall on a steady surface. Stand in front of the light and gauge the perfect distance to create a thick and steady clear shadow.

    • 2

Place a friend or an object on a chair in between the light and the wall.

    • 3

Use tape to stick a large piece of paper onto the wall so the shadow falls onto it. Make sure the paper is large enough to sketch the silhouette picture.

    • 4

Use a pencil and trace around the silhouette shadow. Be steady with your hand but don't worry about making mistakes. You can correct them afterwards.

    • 5

Choose various items to create different silhouette portraits. Use a person, a vase of flowers or a still life scenario. Color in your final designs with a dark marker.
