When was Broadway named?

The name "Broadway" was coined by the Dutch in the 17th century, when they were the first Europeans to settle the island of Manhattan. The word "brede weg" means "broad way" in Dutch, and was an appropriate name for the thoroughfare that ran from the southern tip of the island (what is now Bowling Green) all the way to Harlem.
