The 1957 original Broadway production of "West Side Story" received two Antoinette Perry (Tony) awards in the categories of scenic design and choreography.
The film adaptation of the Broadway play received broad recognition from film and music critics. The popular movie garnered 11 Academy Awards (Oscars) including best picture, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best direction, cinematography, art direction, sound, score, editing, costumes, and a special award for choreography. The film also received a Grammy award for best soundtrack, a Writers Guild award, a New York Film Critics Circle award and three Golden Globe awards.
"West Side Story" was revived with a new cast and ran for several years on Broadway. Debbie Allen received a Drama Desk award for outstanding featured actress in a musical and the production was nominated for three Tony awards.
In 2009, the Broadway production of "West Side Story" was again revived with a new cast and updated scenery and with several of the original musical scores translated into Spanish. The new production won a Grammy award in 2010 for best musical show album and was nominated in 2009 for a Tony award for best musical revival.
