The original name of the Hollywood sign was "Hollywoodland".

It was erected in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for a new housing development called "Hollywoodland". The sign was originally much larger than the current one, and it included the word "land".

In the 1940s, the sign began to deteriorate and the "land" portion was removed. The sign was restored in the 1970s and became a symbol of Hollywood.
