He was commissioned to find a quicker route to Asia by sailing north along the coast of North America. While he did not find the Northwest Passage, his voyages led to Dutch exploration and colonization of the Hudson River valley, which ultimately contributed to the establishment of New Netherland, a Dutch colony that later became New York.
