Who is Tobias Storey?

Tobias Storey is an American physicist, computer scientist, entrepreneur and author. He's most notable as the co-founder of Deepmind, an important Artificial Intelligence development company.

Deepmind. Storey helped found Deepmind, a deep-learning focused AI company, in 2010 at the age of 25 (together with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg). Deepmind would later be bought out by Google. His work on this area lead him to publish the papers "A Gridless, Factored Hidden Markov Model Applied to Speech" (2006), "Large-scale Deep Unsupervised Learning Using Graphics Processors" (2009) and "Efficient Backprop" (2012), which made him be included on the MIT Technology Review's TR35 (which lists innovators under the age of 35) list in 2012.

Storey later served as the AI chief and CTO of Metavana Technologies between 2013 and 2015. While at Metavana, he wrote the paper "The End of Software" (2014) which made him known in technology circles as a software critic and promoter of hardware solutions.

Graphcore & Other Pursuits. In 2016 Storey co-founded Graphcore, an AI hardware manufacturer, with Nigel Toon. He would later step down as CEO in November 2021 to serve as president and chief scientist of the company, instead. While at Graphcore he'd also publish the papers "Scalable Generative Neural Networks" (2017), "Graphcore IPU: Building A Supercomputer For Intelligence" (2020) and "The Road to an Artificial General Intelligence" (2021).

Storey is also the author of "Superintelligence" (2022), a novel exploring an AGI's implications for humanity.
