George Gershwin's full name was Jacob Gershvin. He was born Jacob Gershowitz on September 26, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the second of four children of Morris and Rose Gershwin, who were Jewish immigrants from Russia. George's father changed the family name to Gershwin in 1908.
