How to Find out if You're a Good Songwriter

Everybody has at least one good song in them, but in order to become a professional songwriter, you need to be able to churn out good songs on a regular basis. It’s not enough to have a handful of treasures in your portfolio. If you’re planning to be a working songwriter in a major music town like Nashville, you need to be able to whip up a tune and/or lyric on demand. If you’re not sure about quitting your day job and taking off to music row with your demos in hand, ask yourself if you truly have what it takes. Here are a few ways to decide if you’re ready for the big leagues.

Instructions

    • 1

See if you can get a local band or two to start performing some of your material. If it’s good, they’ll want it. Musicians are always looking for good, new material to perform.

    • 2

Enter your songs in a songwriting contest. If your songs are accepted, you may be on the right track. If they win, you just might have something special.

    • 3

Send a demo of your song to a few local producers or recording studios and request an honest opinion.

    • 4

Join songwriter groups and organizations, and ask for feedback from your fellow members.

    • 5

Take a few songwriting courses, and ask your instructor for an honest assessment of your abilities.

    • 6

Perform your material in places where other musicians hang out. If they frequently come up to you and ask about performing the songs, you may have a few hits.
