Tom Petty wrote and recorded "Free Fallin' " with his writing partner Jeff Lynne in only two days.
"Free Fallin' " references several locales in the Los Angeles area, including the neighborhood of Reseda, the San Fernando Valley and Mulholland Drive.
Released in June 1989, "Free Fallin' " reached the No.7 position on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for 21 weeks.
MCA Records initially rejected Full Moon Fever because of what they perceived as a lack of hits, including "Free Fallin'." Tom Petty came back six months later with the same album and they accepted it.
In an interview with Esquire Magazine, Tom Petty admitted: " 'Free Fallin' is a very good song. Maybe it would be one of my favorites if it hadn't become this huge anthem. But I'm grateful that people like it."
"Free Fallin' " has not waned in popularity. Rolling Stone ranked it No. 177 on its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list in 2004. Popular artists such as Stevie Nicks and John Mayer have recorded cover versions of the song.
