How to Extract Background Music

Aspiring singers, vocalists and karaoke enthusiasts feel comfortable practicing their skill on previously recorded songs. The only problem with these songs is that another singer is already singing the lyrics and you need to find a way to extract the background music from the track. After removing the lyrics and vocal tracks using audio editing software, you'll be left with only the background music–on which you can practice your singing.

Instructions

  1. Using Mixcraft

    • 1

Download and install Mixcraft. You can find its downloadable free trial from the link in Resources below.

    • 2

Install the plug-in required for extracting background music. The plug-in is called Extra Boy Vocal Removal. You can download it from the link in Resources.

    • 3

Open Mixcraft after installation. Go to "Start" > "All Programs" > "Mixcraft."

    • 4

Click the “Open” button and load the track for which you want to extract background.

    • 5

Click on “FX.” “Track 1 Effects” dialog box will now appear.

    • 6

Click “Select New Effect to Add” and choose “Extra Boy Effect” from the drop down list.

    • 7

Click on “Play” and listen to the track in Mixcraft’s player. You will now hear just the background music of the song with the vocals. You can save the file by going to “File” > “Save.”

    Using Wavosaur

    • 8

Download and install Wavosaur. Open Wavosaur after it installs.

    • 9

Go to “File” > “Open.” Now open the track you want to extract background music from.

    • 10

Click on “Process” from the menu on the top. Now select “Vocal Remover.” This will allow Wavosaur to remove vocal frequencies from the song. After it’s done, you will only be left with background music.

    Using Karaoke Anything

    • 11

Download and install Karaoke Anything. Open Karaoke Anything after it installs.

    • 12

Click on “File” > “Open.” Now open the track that you want to extract background music from. Click on “MP3 Player Mode.”

    • 13

Use the scroll bar to put the “Karaoke Effect” at maximum. Now, Karaoke Anything will leave the song with just the background music.
