How to Write a Doo Wap Song

Doo wap is a musical style that evolved in the 1950's from the musical styles of jazz and Rhythm and Blues. It is characterized by the non-sensical "Doo Wap" lyrics that the lead singer sings at the end of a series of lyrics and that backup singers sing to harmonize with the lead singer. Acapella Doo-Wap songs use back up singers singing Doo Wap lyrics to take the place of instruments. Writing a Doo Wap a successful Doo Wap song may take some musical talent, but Doo Wap songs should mainly be written for personal enjoyment.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether you will use instruments in your song. Traditionally, Doo Wap was an acapella music style, but more modern Doo Wap groups such as "Boys to Men" and "Hanson" have used instruments in their recorded music.

    • 2

Write your song's melody. The melody is the series of musical notes that the lead singer will sing in your Doo Wap song. If you can play an instrument, use that instrument to sound out the melody. Try to record your melody to a recording device, such as a tape recorder, to make it easier

    • 3

Write the lyrics to your music. Doo Wap songs can be about serious topics such as love or sadness, or they can be about light-hearted topics such as nice weather. Write something that you feel comfortable singing about and that makes you feel good. If you recorded your melody, listen to it while writing your lyrics to make sure the song works with your melody.

Create Doo Wap words for your song. Remember, Doo Wap words are not real words and do not have to make sense. Try to write words that fit the rhythm of your song and can be used by other singers to harmonize with the lead singer.
