Should the Alleluia be sung or recited?

According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), the Alleluia is sung during certain seasons of the liturgical year (unless it is replaced by another acclamation).

Here are the guidelines for the singing or reciting of the Alleluia:

1. Singing the Alleluia:

- During the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Lent, the Alleluia is omitted except on Solemnities and Feasts.

- During all the other seasons, except for Lent as noted above, the Alleluia is sung before the Gospel Acclamation.

2. Reciting the Alleluia:

- When the Alleluia is not sung, it is recited in a clear and distinct manner.

So, depending on the liturgical season and specific circumstances, the Alleluia may be sung or recited.
