Laryngitis is the most common cause of a raspy voice. It's an inflammation of the voice box (larynx) that often results from a viral infection, such as the common cold or flu. Other causes of laryngitis include:
- Allergies
- Acid reflux
- Smoking
- Vocal strain
- Chronic sinusitis
- Thyroid problems
Acute laryngitis usually lasts for less than 2 weeks and goes away on its own. Chronic laryngitis lasts for more than 3 weeks and may require treatment.
Symptoms of laryngitis include:
- Hoarseness
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Difficulty swallowing
- Ear pain
- Headache
Treatment for laryngitis:
- Rest your voice
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Use a humidifier
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
- If your laryngitis is severe, you may need to see a doctor for treatment
Prevention of laryngitis:
- Avoid exposure to allergens and irritants
- Don't smoke
- Limit alcohol intake
- Don't strain your voice
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Get enough rest
