How to Learn Music Pitch

Music pitch refers to the characteristic of the sound that is determined by the rate of the vibrations that produce the sound. Therefore, the pitch refers to how high or low the note is. Within music, many of the notes have different pitches. In order to learn music pitch, you need to understand the relationship between the sound of the note and its pitch, the connection between pitch and frequency, and the octaves associated with each pitch and frequency.

Obtain an understanding between the sound of a note, and its pitch. The pitch refers to how high or low the note is. Therefore, the high notes generally have a higher pitch than lower notes. In order to further improve your understanding of this concept, play some of the higher and lower notes on the piano and compare and contrast their sound. By doing this, you will be able to characterize the sound of notes with a high pitch, and sounds with a lower pitch.

Analyze the connection between pitch and frequency. The frequency is the rate of vibration produced by the sound wave of the note. High notes generally have a higher frequency than lower notes. Therefore, the higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. In order to further examine this relationship, once again play some of the higher and lower notes on the piano. By doing this, you will be learning pitch by listening to what notes of higher and lower frequencies sound like.

Understand the division of the octaves. The octaves, or groups of notes, are typically categorized into nine divisions based on their sound, pitch, and frequency. These divisions consist of the sub-contra octave, the contra octave, the great octave, the small octave, the one-line octave, the two-line octave, the three-line octave, the four-line octave, and the five-line octave. The sub-contra octave contains the notes with the lowest sound, pitch, and frequency, and the five-line octave consists of the notes with the highest sound, pitch, and frequency. Comprehending these divisions will help you to understand that, as you move to the notes on the right of the piano, the sound and pitch become higher, and the frequency becomes larger.

Examine the tables of musical pitches. The tables of musical pitches list the different notes, their octave designation, and their corresponding frequency. In order to learn pitch, looking at a table such as this provides a good reference tool. You can find the tables of musical pitches online.
