Tips on a Good Singing Audition

Actors and singers are required to audition before booking a job in a stage, film or recording production. Singing auditions are different from acting ones because they require a different type of performing. No matter what the audition project involves, singers must be prepared to put on a full performance while singing and possibly sight-read sheet music.
  1. Music Selection

    • Review the audition notice for the singing audition prior to selecting your music. When auditioning for a singing production, the audition may require a song from a particular time period or genre. During the research phase, select a song that not only showcases your vocal abilities but also your acting talent. Read the lyrics as if it were not apart of a song but rather a monologue. During a singing audition, the casting director wants to hear your vocal talent as well as see your acting ability. If auditioning for a musical theater production, take note of the roles for which you will be auditioning. Read the musical script and choose a song that reflects the same characteristics of the character you wish to play. If auditioning for singing groups, review the style of the music for which the group is known and select a song that best showcases your vocal ability.

    Vocal Warm-Up

    • Like any muscle in your body, vocal chords must be warmed up to perform best. Prior to arriving at the audition, warm up your vocal chords by humming standard vocal scales. Humming relaxes the throat and prepares the vocal chords. Avoid drinking any dairy products or soft drinks the day of the audition and consume at least six 8-oz. glasses of water to keep the throat hydrated.

    Performance

    • During a singing audition, the casting director is not only reviewing your vocal talent but also how well you perform the song. Performance is more than singing well, it also involves your stage presence. Keep your shoulders back and use your body to emphasize the emotions of the song. Do not fully act out the song but also avoid standing completely still while singing. Small movements such as lifting your arms while singing a high note or dropping to your knees during an emotional peak of the song can boost your performance while maintaining focus on your voice.
