Qualifications for a Singing Career

It's not easy having a career as a singer, but you can still go far if you possess talent. Those starting out, however, may not be hired for jobs based on just natural talent and no formal training. It helps to have some specific qualifications on a resume to help you land early jobs before you breaking into a more lucrative career.
  1. Education

    • Obtain a bachelor's degree in vocal performance before going out searching for singing jobs. Don't be fooled into thinking that natural talent can allow you to skip training. Attending a respected music university and getting training from a professional singer can help you learn vocal techniques that may help prevent vocal injuries as well as train your voice to sustain long tours. Additionally, music education will help you understand the concepts of music when working with fellow musicians. Beneficial courses include music theory, as well as composition and musical history. This type of education can go all the way up to a master's degree, which can look even better on a resume. However, if you can't afford college, private singing lessons with a respected private teacher can give you just as much education and clout.

    Skills

    • You may be able to sing with technical precision after education, but it doesn't necessarily make you stand out from the crowd. Develop your own identity through your singing style. Learn to sing as many different styles as you can. Master the art of communication since you not only have to communicate with audiences as a singer, you have to develop relationships with people around you. These people will be band members you tour with, managers, agents and even recording engineers and executives.

    Experience

    • Once you finish your education, going out and finding as many singing jobs as you can will help you move up the career ladder. It might involve doing gigs that aren't always attractive at first and may involve long days and nights on the road. Nevertheless, the more jobs you take, the more your singing skills will improve. Keep in mind, though, that some singers have to work in smaller venues for years before becoming more successful. Gain experience living on the road since even if you become a world-renowned singer, long tours will still be in the picture. Impress your audiences in each city and you may eventually be discovered by a big-name agent or record company executive.
