How to Tell Which Pitch You Are Singing in

The most basic skill needed to learn how to sing is learning the different scales associated with music, such as the chromatic, major and minor scales. Learn the notes of each of these scales on an instrument such as a piano before you try to sing them; this will allow you to hear the pitch of each note, allowing you to try to match your voice to the sound. Once you have learned these notes, sing them back and figure out which pitch you are using.

Instructions

    • 1

Sing a note into your tape recorder. Hold the sound for five to 10 seconds to make sure you record it.

    • 2

Play the recorder back to hear the note. Determine if it is a high or low pitch to help you narrow down the matching sound on the piano. A low pitch will be on the left half of the keyboard, while higher pitches will be located on the right half of the keyboard.

    • 3

Play two keys on the piano, one that sounds higher than your recorded tone and one that sounds lower. Keep doing this until you have narrowed down the possible notes on the keyboard you were trying to match with your voice.
