Proper posture is essential to effective voice production. Your shoulders should be relaxed, and your abdomen should be supporting your upper body. Avoid slouching or tensing the muscles in your neck and back. You must be relaxed to produce strong vocalizations.
Soprano singers need breath control to produce the loud, clear sounds associated with opera. A singer whose voice isn't supported by proper breathing practices can damage a singing voice permanently. You should be able to feel your abdomen gently expand when you breathe in and slowly deflate as you exhale. Then use your diaphragm to control the breath.
The warm up isn't restricted to the vocal cords. A full body warm-up that allows for relaxation of your face, jaw, neck and back can be beneficial. Exercises like Thai Chi and yoga are excellent for producing a calm and relaxed state. Tense muscles can restrict your voice and won't allow for optimum results.
Warm up your voice slowly to keep from straining your vocal cords. Vocal exercises should start in your most comfortable singing range, then expand into higher and lower ranges. Take your time, since the vocal warm up should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Keeping yourself healthy is an important part of maintaining a good voice. If you become ill, make sure to rest your voice and return to singing only when you are fully healed. Keep yourself well hydrated and maintain a healthy diet. Caffeine and alcohol can dry out your vocal folds, so use them in moderation or not at all. Avoid straining your voice in your everyday environment. Yelling or speaking loudly can strain your vocal cords, as can whispering. Proper maintenance of your voice will assure you are able to produce a quality sound for many years to come.
