How to Sing Like a Pop Star

Pop music follows us everywhere we go in life, from grocery stores and restaurants to shopping centers and nightspots. Pretty much everyone is familiar with the upbeat sounds of pop music from stars such as Pink and Britney Spears, even if they don't listen to the radio that often. If you enjoy and appreciate the singing styles of notable pop musicians, then it is necessary to take the appropriate steps in learning their vocal techniques.

Instructions

Learn how to breathe properly by engaging in breathing exercises. Effective breathing is a necessity for singing in any type of musical genre, and pop is certainly no exception. Use your diaphragm's muscles in order to sing with power and strength. Inhale, but make sure not to do so too deeply. Hold your breath for several seconds. Make a hissing "Sssss" sound with your voice and do so until you fully "empty" out your lungs. Repeat this process several times in a row, but extend the "Sssss" sound slightly every time. This exercise will enable you to hold notes for a significantly longer period of time when you sing.

Learn thyroid tilt. Thyroid tilt is a common pop music singing technique and gives the vocals a sweeter and softer vibe. Thyroid tilt is also useful for improving vocal range. Place your hand over your larynx. Then, in a quiet voice, say "meow" similar to a cat. Feel the forward motion of your thyroid cartilage. This will make the vocal folds thinner and longer, which will blend your breath and sound together and give your voice a clear quality. Upon singing higher pop music notes, the cartilage will tilt due to a need for the vocal cords to stretch out.

Record your voice. Whenever you get the chance, record yourself singing along to pop songs. This will help you identify your strengths and your weaknesses in singing, and know what to accentuate and what to eliminate.

Diversify your singing styles. Pop music is a combination of a variety of music genres, from R&B and hip-hop to dance, rock and roll, musical theater, country, folk and soul. Practice singing in many styles in order to encourage your voice to develop versatility.

Practice singing frequently. The more you practice, the better your vocal stamina will become. Start slowly in the beginning with half an hour every other day or so. Then, as your vocal cords strengthen, raise your practicing time to about 45 minutes, seven days a week. For optimal results, try practicing when you have had sufficient rest and your vocal cords are comfortable.

Drink a lot of water. To keep your vocal cords hydrated and working efficiently, consume plenty of water on a daily basis (eight glasses is a good amount). Restrict your caffeine intake especially right before singing, so that means cutting down on tea, coffee and sodas.

Listen for and monitor your pitch. The key to being a good pop singing is singing in tune. As you sing, it is vital to ensure that your voice is completely in tune with the song accompaniment and music key. One way in which to increase your aural awareness is by listening closely to various notes and then attempting to copy them vocally. As you sing, always analyze your pitch and correct it as you go if you identify any problems.
