How to Put Emotion in Singing

Two singers can have nearly identical ability in terms of pitch, range and rhythmic timing, but the singer who puts his heart into his song will captivate his audience more readily every time. Singing with emotion turns a performance into an experience of personal communication. You can become a more dynamic, masterful performer by training yourself to insert emotion into your vocals.

Instructions

    • 1

Imagine various emotions as you warm up vocally. Sing identical vocal lines using various emotions such as joy, sadness and anger.

    • 2

Choose songs to perform that have personal meaning to you if possible. It is easier to sing with emotion if you can identify with the lyrics of a song.

    • 3

Visualize a person or scenario that triggers emotions within you as you sing. This technique can transport you from the stage to a mental arena in which emotions are more readily accessible.

    • 4

Relax your body and mind by consciously tensing and relaxing your muscles prior to a performance. Practice slow, steady breathing as well before and during performances. These techniques counteract anxiety. If you are consumed by anxiety while singing, you are less likely to be able to draw from your emotions.

    • 5

Meditate on the meaning of a song prior to performing it. Thinking deeply about the lyrics and musical dynamics of a vocal piece can help you to release appropriate emotions during a performance.
