How do I Sing With Pure Vowel Sounds?

Great vowel pronunciation delivers the beauty of the human voice to the listener. Vowels evoke emotional responses, so pure sound and a relaxed tone are essential to inspire the response you want from your audience.

"The Handbook for Acoustic Ecology" defines pure vowels as those "produced with a fixed vocal tract shape and tongue position". For instance, the "ah" sound in "father" is a pure vowel, but the "a" sound in "take" is not.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the vowel sound you want to sing. Imagine the pronunciation of the vowel silently. Focus on how you want the vowel to sound.

    • 2

Relax your lips. Open your mouth. Form the lip and mouth shape of the vowel.

    • 3
A relaxed tongue makes great vowel sounds.

Relax your tongue. Release any tension in your jaw. Relax the muscles in the back of your throat, underneath your chin and along the front of your neck.

    • 4
Breathe and fill your lungs with air to fuel the voice.

Inhale and expand the back of your throat slightly.

    • 5
Aim at your upper two front teeth for great resonance.

Sing the vowel. Aim the sound directly at your upper front teeth. Relax the muscles in your chest as you hold the note.

    • 6

Sustain the vocal sound through the breath. Stop the sound a few seconds before you run out of air.
