About the In Jubilo Women's Choir

Cedar City, Utah, is located about 250 miles south of Salt Lake City. Home of Southern Utah University, Cedar City is renowned for its vibrant arts community, exemplified by such annual theatrical events as the Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Neil Simon Festival. In addition, Cedar City is also home to the In Jubilo Women's Community Chorale, a well-regarded local choir.
  1. About the Choir

    • The In Jubilo Women's Community Chorale is an all-female choir of volunteer singers that has been performing in Cedar City since 2002. The group's mission statement is found on its website (injubilocc.org), and reads: "The In Jubilo Women's Community Chorale is a chorus of volunteer singers committed to rehearsing and performing a choral repertory at the highest level of choral artistry achievable." Membership in the choir is determined through an audition process, and existing members must attend regular rehearsals and re-audition in order to maintain membership.

    General Information

    • Attendance of all rehearsals in mandatory, although members can be excused for extraordinary circumstances such as illness or emergency. During concert performances, singers are required to follow specific rules, including no purses or water bottles onstage, no waving from the stage and keeping movement to a minimum. Chorale dues are $25 per year, and should be turned in to the chorale treasurer at the beginning of the first rehearsal. A performance schedule is published at the beginning of the season, and members are expected to reserve those dates on their calendars.

    Artistic Staff

    • The In Jubilo Women's Community Chorale is led by its director, who is responsible for the choir's music selection, leading rehearsals and preparing the choir for performances. Piano accompaniment is provided by the accompanist, who is also expected to attend all rehearsals and performances. The group also has an administrative and production staff, which includes the chorale president, vice-president, treasurer, manager, historian, librarian, media specialist, publicity manager and section leaders who assist the director in musical matters.

    In the News

    • Occasionally the activities of the In Jubilo Women's Community Chorale are noted in the local media. For example, a May 2010 article appearing in "Iron County Today," a weekly newspaper covering Cedar City and the surrounding communities, detailed In Jubilo's special Mother's Day choral concert at Cedar City's Heritage Theater. In the article, choir director Jackie Riddle-Jackson noted that the concert was scheduled to feature a selection of sacred songs, some Mother's Day songs and some "fun songs," including "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."
