How to Help a Student Sing in Tune

With correct classification and placement within a choir, any student can be taught to sing on pitch. Tutor a student having pitch trouble with individual lessons. After learning to listen to his own voice and becoming comfortable with the vocal feel of tones, your student will soon sing with dramatic improvements.

Instructions

    • 1

Classify singers correctly in a choral setting to encourage each member to sing in his own comfort range. Instruct the boys to sing a song such as "Jingle Bells" beginning at a higher tone key such as D. Designate the boys who choose to sing in a lower octave as bass. Boys who choose to sing the higher octave become tenors. Repeat the process for girls at the high school level and beyond.

    • 2

Sing ascending and descending scales with an individual who demonstrates difficulty singing on pitch. Focus on matching the high pitch and low pitch. Instruct the student to sing a simple tune, such as "Do Re Mi," at a comfortable range unaccompanied. Begin the song again moving up a half step. Congratulate students upon completion of the song when they sign it correctly. Continue to move the starting tone up and down the scale. Ask the singer to self-evaluate his performance.

    • 3

Ask the student to sing a phrase at an interval with an ascending fifth such as "Here Comes the Bride." Demonstrate how to place a hand on the breath-band, just above the naval and sing the first line of the song. Press inward on the breath-band quickly on "comes the bride." The sudden burst of air will help students reach the higher tones.

    • 4

Imitate the sound of a police siren together. Begin with low tones and work toward higher tones. Allow the student to stay in falsetto voice and acknowledge the feeling. Sing "Here Comes the Bride" or another song, making use of the falsetto voice. Practice matching pitches with falsetto voice until the singer is comfortable.

Place the student in a choral lineup next to a strong singer. Continue to work with the student on an individual basis until improvements are maintained independently. Encourage the student by telling him that that the voice is like an instrument; beautiful singing can be learned.
