What is scant singing?

Scant singing is a musical performance technique in which the singer uses a very quiet voice, often barely audible to the audience. It is often used to create a sense of intimacy or vulnerability, or to emphasize a particular line of lyrics. Scant singing can be challenging, as the singer must be very careful not to overpower the music or project the voice too much, but when done well, it can be a very effective technique.

Scant singing is sometimes confused with "vocal fry", which is a vocal effect produced by relaxing the vocal cords and allowing them to vibrate at a low frequency. While scant singing can sometimes involve vocal fry, it is not the same technique. Scant singing is intentional, and the singer has control over the volume and tone of their voice, while vocal fry is a natural vocal effect that can be difficult to control.
