Why are they called the Pussycat Dolls if there is only one person singing in band?

There is more than one person signing in the Pussycat Dolls. The group consists of Nicole Scherzinger, Ashley Roberts, Carmit Bachar, Jessica Sutta, and Melody Thornton.
