How to Make a Pop Filter for Your Home Studio Microphone

A pop filter is a handy tool for a home recording studio. You may be able to get away with holding a T-shirt or a thin piece of paper in front of your mouth, but it isn't as convenient or effective as a true pop filter. A pop filter can be pricey, but you can create a homemade version for about 10 dollars and not a lot of work. It may not look as nice, but it beats the alternatives if you don't want to spend a lot on a commercial product.

Instructions

    • 1

Lightly sand the embroidery ring. A smooth hoop will keep the nylon from snagging and ripping.

    • 2

Sand a 12-inch length of wooden dowel until smooth.

    • 3

Glue one end of the dowel to the outside of the hoop, like a lollipop.

    • 4

Cut one leg off the pantyhose and insert the inner hoop from the embroidery ring inside the removed leg. Slide it all the way down to the toe. This is where the sanding you did earlier becomes important.

    • 5

Tie off the rest of the leg against the hoop and cut off the extra.

    • 6

Put the embroidery hoops back together and tighten the screw on the outside.

    • 7

Poke holes in one rubber handle of each of your clamps with an awl.

    • 8

Thread a bolt through the holes with a washer on the front side, connecting the handles together, with the jaws facing in opposite directions. Place another washer, then a lock washer, then the nut on the back side.

    • 9

Put the smaller clamp's jaws on the dowel forming the handle of the pop filter. The bigger clamp goes on the mic stand.
