How to Become a Better Music Producer

As a music producer you have full creative control over the music you make. It is also your job to convey the message of a song through its content. Skilled audio professionals work hard in many aspects of the musical field whether it is a musical score for a movie, behind the scenes at a television show, or the more traditional musical production work with an artist. Either way, becoming a better music producer means making strides towards improvement and embracing change.

Consider taking a class. If you are a music producer who taught yourself to produce music or you learned from someone else informally, you may want to consider getting certified. There are many schools available that can officially train you in a wide range of musical production fields from session recording, recording and mixing consoles, to entertainment business. Certifying yourself in the music production field will make you more professional and knowledgeable about your job.

Collaborate with other producers. Working with other producers will help you to sharpen your skills and become better by bouncing ideas off of someone else. You may also find that the other producer is able to learn or become inspired by you. This will also help you become more well known amongst your musical peers.

Explore new styles and genres of music. Inspiration in music production can come from the strangest and most unexpected places. Sometimes to become a better and more well-rounded producer, it takes exploring a genre you are not comfortable or familiar with. If you are primarily a hip hop music producer, listen to some country or classical music and you may find inspiration where you never thought possible. This is one way to better yourself and to become a more complete producer.

Solicit some feedback. Although we are usually our own biggest critics, the truth is as a music producer, in order to become better you will have to get an outside opinion. Asking for some constructive critiquing of your work will allow you to gain a different perspective while gathering valuable market and public opinions. Be sure to take everything that is said with a grain of salt and not let it discourage you from doing what you love most.

Upgrade your equipment. Sometimes to improve as a music producer, it simply means you need to use materials and equipment that are on your level. If you notice that you are still using a sound sampling kit from the 70's or 80's, it may be time to upgrade. Look for unique equipment when upgrading that will allow you to perform your craft efficiently but won't sound like everything else that is out.
